General information. The winter wren is a lively, small passerine with a short up-right tail. It hides skillfully in the terrain and can be hard to spot. Usually, the bird is noticed only from its song or staccato-like call, which relative to its size is surprisingly strong.

  • Length 10 cm
  • Nests on the ground
  • Winters in Central Europe
  • Feeds on insects and worms

Habitat. Suitable biotopes for the wren are the edge of ditches with lush vegetation, thickets in forest clearings and groves. Sparse pine forests do not provide a suitable habitat for the wren.

Distribution in Vaasa. The winter wren is a relatively rare nester in Vaasa and was observed in about 60 survey blocks. It occurs in greatest density in the forests around Pilvilampi, Risön and Öjen.
